A fine pair of French side tables or etageres - sometimes called a what-not - or nightstands of mahogany in the Empire style.

Each table featuring three octagonal shaped shelves with gallery edges framed in brass and mounted to stylish pierced side supports with a footed stretcher base.

A what-not is a piece of furniture derived from the French étagère which usually consists of slender uprights or pillars, supporting a series of shelves for holding trifles, keys or spare change, or "what nots", hence the allusive name.
