A handsome British military officer's trench periscope of heavy brass and wood from World War One, featuring a brass eyepiece with focus ring - the optics are in fair working condition - with removable wood handle with a brass screw attachment. Stamped 'Periscope - Mk. IX - 1918 - R & J Beck, Ltd. No. 26385'
The Mk IX was generally regarded as a tool intended for use by officers - providing a potentially lifesaving function by enabling a clear view over the parapet of the trench into 'no man's land' without risking life and limb to the attentions of German snipers in the opposing trench.
